Exquisite Surroundings

After cruising Cape Breton Island for three weeks, it’s time to start moving again. The plan now is to just keep going west, visiting even more gorgeous undeveloped seaside anchorages. We’re catching whatever light breeze we can get along the way.

Given the predicted benign conditions overnight: diminishing mild southern breeze, almost no swell and partly sunny skies, we made a short stopover at a tiny nook just inside of Owl’s Head. Scattered thunderstorms surrounding us, but none too threatening. I instinctively put the iPad into the oven, just in case!

Zooming in…

Why push it when we have time? Today is Wednesday and Ernesto is aiming for us, but won’t arrive until Monday. Will he go out to sea? We’re in the “cone of uncertainty” now, but we’ll need to wait and see.

Storms pass to our NE leaving this beautiful rainbow, as Fayaway clocks around her anchor (see more below).

An Osprey mother fawns over her maturing chicks, perched on a nesting platform above the Owl’s Head light tower. We’re assuming that the Coast Guard built the platform especially for the Osprey; she would have likely built the nest onto the light itself. If you can’t beat ’em join ’em!

Owl’s Head: lo-res photo- see the nesting platform atop?

Sorry, but we don’t have a decent zoom camera else I’d plunk a photo of the unfolding scene here. You’ll need to take my word for it that the feeding frenzy is perfectly clear with our banged-up 7×50 binoculars. And there’s no mistaking for the cries that the kids make when osprey mom approaches with a tasty mouthful of mutilated fish 🐟.

Several evenings in a row were anchored in beautiful seaside spots. Once again when first dropping the hook, we’re appropriately facing SW, as approaching thunderstorms loom in the west. And after the nasty dark storm clouds pass, dumping a meager wetness, we spin a three-sixty by morning.

Anchor tracking overnight. Fun!

Off we go again this morning, to where? We have three anchorages picked out, based on how the conditions go. At 0600, seas are calm and light northern wind. Put up the main and let’s see how we go!

Morning sun burning through fog off our stern at 0600, as we depart for further points west.
